TAMPA — Tampa Prep girls volleyball coach Andrew Wilson knew exactly what to expect against Carrollwood Day School on Tuesday night.
He anticipated the undefeated Patriots were going to play scrappy and be fundamentally sound on defense and with ball control.
To win, Wilson said the strategy for his Terrapins had to be a simple one.
“Score points and not rely on them to make mistakes,” he said.
Corey Perkins and Alana Nelson each finished with 10 kills while Kamryn Beach notched nine service aces to lead Tampa Prep to a three-game sweep of CDS, 25-12, 25-17 and 25-22, in a Class 3A-District 7 match.
The win puts Tampa Prep (7-9, 2-0) atop the standings while CDS (10-1, 3-1) falls to second.
Carrollwood Day owned a 9-2 lead in the third set when Tampa Prep rallied to outscore the visitors 15-8 to tie the set at 17. The teams traded leads toward the final five points until Tampa Prep sealed the win on a CDS error.
“It was nice how they were able to come back in the end,” Wilson said.
Junior Aisling Sheehan was the lead attacker for CDS.
“They'll probably finish first and we'll be second and we'll see them in the (district tournament) finals,” CDS coach Eric Praetorius said.
