TAMPA -

The road to the state track meets begins in earnest this week with district meets in the lower classifications, with the larger classes following early next week.Here’s a preview of district meets in the lower classifications. The larger classes follow early next week.

It looks like Hillsborough County athletes have plenty to look forward to this year, with the top four athletes in each event advancing to regionals, and then possibly to state meets at the University of North Florida.

A quick breakdown:

CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 9

AT BERKELEY PREP

WHEN: Friday, noon

TEAMS: Anclote, Berkeley Prep, Fivay, Academy of the Holy Names, Jesuit, Middleton, Robinson, Tampa Catholic, Weeki Wachee, Wesley Chapel

OUTLOOK: It’s possible Jesuit could sweep the discus and shot put events with Cameron Ruff, Jack Taylor and Vincent Jackson, who all have tossed the shot more than 48 feet. In the pole vault, watch out for Jesuit’s Nick Catchur, who earlier this season set the school record by clearing 14 feet, 3 inches. On the girls’ side, Academy’s Ryann McEnany is a strong favorite in the 100 hurdles (14.84 seconds) and the long jump, and Jaguar Claire Snyder is favored in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

CLASS 1A-DISTRICT 8

AT CALVARY CHRISTIAN

WHEN: Friday, 3:30 p.m.

TEAMS: Academy at the Lakes, Bayshore Christian, Calvary Christian, Cambridge, Carrollwood Day, Indian Rocks Christian, Seffner Christian, Tampa Bay Christian, Tampa Prep

OUTLOOK: One of the most interesting athletes from this classification is Seffner Christian’s Josh Keenan, who last week ran the 3,200 meters in 9:39.69, a near 20-second drop from his 3,200 time a month ago. Perhaps Keenan has broken through a barrier and is on the verge of an extremely satisfying finish at state. Tampa Bay Christian’s Jamari Johnson is favored in the discus.

FLORIDA RELAYS RECAP

In addition to Jeremiah Green’s national-best leap of 52 feet, 1.75 inches in the triple jump, there were several outstanding performances at last week’s Florida Relays in Gainesville:

Alonso senior hurdler William Taylor-Haynes, third in the 110s (14.26 seconds);

Chamberlain’s Andrea Aaron, fourth in discus (130 feet, 10 inches) and third in the shot put (42-6);

Bloomingdale’s Andrew LeBlanc, seventh in the 800 meters (1:54.95), plus teammate Kevin Heron 10th in the 800 (1:55.99);

Freedom’s Sandra Akachukwu, fifth in the long jump (18 feet, 7 inches) and eighth in the high jump (5-2);

Freedom’s Faith Woodard, third in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches);

Jesuit’s Nick Catchur, eighth in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches);

Bloomingdale’s Annie Barrett, eighth in the 1,600 meters (5:21.84);

Steinbrenner’s Matt McGee, second in the 1,600 meters at 4:22.62;

Seffner Christian’s Josh Keenan, 11th in the 3,200 meters (9:39.69);

Bloomingdale’s boys, seventh in the 4x800 relay (8:09.35) ahead of Steinbrenner in ninth (8:13.26);

Wharton’s girls, eighth in the 4x400 relay (3:57.23).
