TAMPA — Tampa Bay Tech coach Jayson Roberts couldn’t help but feel a little bit of déjà vu as Plant, down a touchdown, smothered a bad snap inside the red zone with just more than a minute and a half left in the game.
He’d seen it a season ago where a two-touchdown lead on the Panthers slipped away, but Roberts said he never called into question his team’s heart and the skill of his playmakers. His confidence was supported as senior Tajee Fullwood sealed a 14-7 Tampa Bay Tech (4-1) win with an interception in the last minute for his fourth takeaway of the game.
“When you play against great teams it always pulls the best out of you,” Roberts said. “We felt like we let one go last year, losing by a touchdown, and our seniors took it personal and they wanted to beat Plant.”
For Fullwood the first half was a mixed bag as the senior athlete scooped up a pair of fumbles, but he put the ball on the ground twice. Roberts said at halftime he told his playmaker he was going to need to have a short memory and focus on what needed to be done.
Fullwood responded in the second half with a pair of interceptions.
The Titans’ first half was highlighted TDs of 28 and 2 yards by Deon Thompson, giving TBT the lead as the senior finished with 138 yards on the ground.
“We know how to fight through adversity and yes there were some mistakes,” Thompson said. “This is a shock the world moment, to tell the county we are here and it’s great to be doing this together.”
A week after setting school records in passing yards and TDs, Panthers QB Colby Brown was 10 of 29 for 97 yards and three picks.
