Each week, the Tribune prep sports staff selects a Male and Female Athlete of the Week. The selections are based on athletic performance.

Justin Gray, Berkeley Prep

WHY WE CHOSE HIM: The 6-foot-5 senior forward was named MVP of the prestigious Kingdom of the Sun basketball tournament after helping the Buccaneers become the first team from Tampa to win the title. Gray made two 3-pointers and had a crucial steal to set up the tying shot in the final 40 seconds to send the championship game into overtime on Monday. The Buccaneers won, 59-56, against Cardinal Gibbons, and Gray finished with 24 points.

COLLEGE PLANS: Gray has signed to play for Tubby Smith at Texas Tech.

-----

Rachel Briere, Steinbrenner

WHY WE CHOSE HER: She led the Warriors with 12 points in a win against Sarasota in the Indian Rocks Christian Holiday Basketball Tournament championship on Saturday, giving the program its first tournament title. The junior forward scored 35 points in the three-day tournament and is the team's leading scorer at 13.2 points a game.

COLLEGE PLANS: Briere has received interest from schools such as Loyola (Baltimore), UNC-Asheville, Middle Tennessee State, Alabama-Birmingham, Georgia Southern, Florida Southern, North Florida and Colgate.
