FORT MYERS -

The Tampa Catholic softball team rode the solid pitching of freshman Tory Bohanan and a flawless defensive effort to a 5-1 victory Tuesday in a Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinal at Bishop Verot.

Bohanan shut down the Vikings for the first six innings before running into a bit of trouble in the seventh. She allowed five hits - all singles - and struck out five without issuing a walk.

Bohanan also benefited from some outstanding defense, especially by junior shortstop Kathryn Spack, who made several stellar plays. She also led the Tampa Catholic offensive attack with three singles, two runs scored and a stolen base.

1A-3: Cambridge posts one-run win

TAMPA - Cambridge survived a sloppy fifth inning and rallied past Lakeland Sonrise Christian, 5-4 in a Class 1A-Region 3 quarterfinal.

The Lancers seemed to be in cruise control with a 3-0 lead through four innings and senior ace Alexis Caruso on the mound.

But the fifth turned ugly for Cambridge, as two errors and a walk helped the Seminoles send eight batters to the plate and score four to go up 4-3.

Cambridge quickly regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eighth-grader Lindsey Hagberg (2-for-3) doubled in Rachael Bode with the tying run and later scored the winning run on an error.

Caruso (17-6) made sure the Lancers would not relinquish the lead again, retiring the final six in order. She gave up six hits and a walk while striking out six.

Cambridge senior Markie McDermott, who celebrated her 18th birthday Tuesday, went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

1A-3: Seffner Christian cruises to 18-4 win

SEFFNER - Seffner Christian coach Andy Holmes told his team it needed to get off to a good start in the Class 1A-Region 3 quarterfinal against Bayshore Christian (7-10). The Crusaders (12-8) reacted accordingly, scoring five in the first en route to an 18-4 win.

Crusaders starter, eighth-grader Jena Boto, also set the tone by not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. She added a triple in the bottom of the fourth to drive in two during a seven-run inning for Seffner.

Boto allowed four hits, with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Kelsey Schubel went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Crusaders, and D.J. Evers was 2-for-2 and had three stolen bases.

Bayshore pitcher Joyce Tomlin allowed 12 hits, and she had four strikeouts and eight walks.

The game ended in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

DADE CITY - Megan Newsome couldn't have picked a better time for her first hit of the night.

Newsome hit a walk-off double to score Emily Pennington in the bottom of the ninth, helping Pasco (23-6) come from behind to edge South Lake 5-4 in the Class 4A-District 2 quarterfinals.

Colena Lazar homered and had a run-scoring double for Pasco. In addition, she pitched all nine innings, striking our 15.
