Class 4A-Region 2

WHEN: Friday, 3 p.m.

WHERE: Rowdy Gaines Pool, Winter Haven

LOCAL SCHOOLS: Newsome, Plant, Bloomingdale, Wharton, Durant, Strawberry Crest, Steinbrenner, Plant City

OUTLOOK: With Palm Harbor University, East Lake, Plant and Newsome among others, this appears to be the toughest Class 4A region in the state. That said, defending state champion Maddie Hess should cruise in the 100 free and 100 backstroke and Plant’s Ally Donahue is expected to do the same in the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke, the event in which she won the state title last year. Watch for Wharton’s Dee Sopapong in the 200 IM. In diving, another tight battle is set up between Newsome’s Allyson Nied and Plant’s Sydney Power. On the boys side, Plant divers Reid Fleming, Dylan Power and Max Jenkins are seeded No. 1, 2 and 3.

Class 3A-Region 3

WHEN: Saturday, 1 p.m.

WHERE: North Shore Pool, St. Petersburg

LOCAL SCHOOLS: Armwood, Brandon, Chamberlain, Freedom, Gaither, Hillsborough, King, Tampa Bay Tech, Plant City.

OUTLOOK: Sickles freshman Emily Johnson is seeded first in the girls diving competition and Gryphon Kyle Benko is seeded fourth. Freedom’s Marc Berson is seeded second in the 100 butterfly and King’s Jed Rodriguez is seeded first in the 100 breastroke. Also look for Plant City’s Bailey Bowden, who has reached the state meet the past few years, to be a strong contender in the 200 and 500 free races.
