Sunlake prevails in 2A-3

LAND O’ LAKES – For the second time in three seasons, Sunlake High hoisted a district championship trophy, this time at the conclusion of Wednesday’s 12-team, Class 2A-District 3 boys weightlifting meet in the Seahawks’ gymnasium.

The Hawks tallied 42 points to take the title. Springstead, with two champions, finished as the surprise runner-up with 31, followed by Ocala Lake Weir (26), Ocala Vanguard (25) and Ocala Forest (24).

Five-time defending SAC champ Sunlake was paced by sophomore Alex Cremeans’ 520-pound total at 154.

Only the meet’s 10 individual champions automatically qualify for the 2A state meet on April 26 at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The Seahawks also enjoyed second-place finishes by juniors Logan Wolfe at 169 and Dylan Franklin at 238.

Wiregrass Ranch, which finished 11th with nine points, was paced by senior Jordan Mutcherson’s 580-pound total worth a first-place blue ribbon at 238 pounds.

Pasco’s Ivie leads state qualifiers

HUDSON — Pasco senior heavyweight Andrew Ivie was one of four Pasco County weightlifters to take first place in the Class 1A-District 7 meet at Fivay.

Inverness Citrus won the team title with 58 points, followed by Zephyrhills (27) and Gulf (20).

The first-place finishers won spots in the 1A state meet, which will be held April 25 at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

Ivie only had to make one bench press to get 370 pounds. He made two clean and jerks to get a 300-pound lift and a 670-pound total.

Fivay’s Josh Ortiz cut nine pounds in two days and wound up winning the 119-pound weight class. He had a 200-pound bench and a 145-pound clean and jerk to give him a 345-pound total.

Fivay’s Davion Sutton won the 199-pound class with a bench of 315 and a clean and jerk of 275 for a 590-pound total.

River Ridge’s Brent Gwinn won the 129-pound class with a bench of 170 and a clean and jerk of 175 for a 345-pound total.
