DOVER — Strawberry Crest coach John Kelly’s pregame message to his team was to “seize an opportunity to be part of something special.”
The Chargers responded by defeating Class 7A-District 8 opponent East Bay to set the school record for wins in a season with six.
More importantly, with the victory the Chargers remain the only undefeated team in district play.
East Bay (5-3, 1-1) scored 14 points in less than a minute on a long Chris Greene run and a Leondre Boykin interception return to storm back from an early 12-point deficit.
The Chargers (6-2, 3-0) turned the momentum in their favor for good midway through the second quarter, driving 62 yards culminating in a Carswell brothers touchdown connection, Austin to Alex.
Crest receiver Joshua Hyde opened the game with a 54-yard kickoff return and added a 34-yard reception on fourth down to set up a decisive score late, part of his 200 all-purpose yards.
The Chargers’ defense limited East Bay to only one second-half play longer than a yard.
The Chargers will have a chance to clinch a home playoff game and the district title if they defeat Plant City on Friday.
