DOVER — Chris Perez ran for two touchdowns, leading Strawberry Crest to victory against Spoto.
Somehow, the play in the first half was sloppier than the conditions in a game delayed 77 minutes at the start by lightning that also knocked out the sound system.
On the first Strawberry Crest drive, quarterback Tristan Hyde fumbled on a run, and Spoto defensive back Ashton Puesey returned the ball 86 yards for a touchdown.
Hyde’s 8-yard scoring pass to Farron Rainford was negated by a penalty. Undaunted, the Chargers (1-1) scored on their next three possessions for a 20-6 halftime lead.
Spoto QB Kevin Hobley also was involved in a fumble that set up the first score in the opposite direction – a 1-yard run by Perez.
Two minutes later, a low punt into the line and an illegal substitution penalty set up Strawberry Crest at the Spoto 3. The Chargers took the lead for good on the next play when Hyde connected with his brother Joshua to make it 12-6.
Hyde and Clay Cullins hooked up on a 3-yard scoring pass with 21 seconds left in the half, and Perez scored the only second-half points for the Chargers on a 12-yard run.
Hobley redeemed himself in the third quarter with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Anthron Dicks.
