DOVER — In an emotionally charged game that saw a combined 11 personal fouls, Strawberry Crest (3-2) held off Freedom (1-4), which had two possessions inside Chargers territory late in the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback. The game ended with Chargers freshman Darius Sails intercepting at his own 6-yard line.
The game also featured a successful onside kick, a safety, a fake punt, and a blocked field goal that was returned by the kicking team (Freedom) for a touchdown.
Chargers quarterback Austin Carswell accounted for 139 yards of total offense, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Hyde. The defense didn’t allow Freedom to cross midfield until the penultimate play of the first half.
“We got a little selfish there (at the end). We told them all week that there was going to be a little bit of chippiness from what we saw on film,” Crest coach John Kelly said after the game. “We weren’t able to keep our cool.”
Next week, Freedom hosts Sickles and Strawberry Crest is at Durant.
