PLANT CITY — Sophomore Cameron Lehtola kicked a 38-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to lift the Chargers past their backyard rivals Friday night.
The bitterness was evident throughout the Class 7A-District 8 game, in which the officials seemingly moved the ball for more yardage than either of the scrappy teams.
Durant (1-5, 0-2) struck first on a 26-yard field goal by Derek Wells with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Strawberry Crest (4-2, 2-0) moved ahead on a 40-yard interception return for a score by Joshua Engram, and a 2-point conversion pass from John Boscia to Clay Cullins with 1:29 remaining in the first half.
Durant regained the lead on its first play from scrimmage after the break on a 75-yard run by John Hendricks Jr., but the host Cougars came up empty on their last six possessions.
The loss overshadowed three interceptions by Durant cornerback Gabe Brown.
Durant plays at Newsome next week, while Strawberry Crest hosts Riverview.
