ST. PETERSBURG — Largo used another impressive performance from Jarvis Stewart to emerge as the victor against Lakewood in a battle of two of Pinellas County’s best teams.
The senior running back rushed for 236 yards on 37 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Packers to a 20-6 victory, their fourth of the season.
“He’s one of the best running backs I’ve ever had, and he keeps getting better,” Largo coach Rick Rodriguez said.
Largo (4-1) took an early lead when Packers quarterback Donavan Hale scored on a 31-yard bootleg run a few minutes into the first quarter.
Lakewood (3-2) responded when Spartans quarterback Ryan Davis led the hosts on a 73-yard drive capped by a 31-yard completion to Darquez Watson just before the end of the first quarter. The point-after attempt was missed.
Davis (79 rushing yards, 3 passing yards) was knocked out of the game late in the second quarter on a hard hit while attempting a long pass. Spartans receiver Joc Ellison took over and was 4-for-18 for 55 yards with one interception.
Stewart gave the Packers a cushion a little more than two minutes into the second quarter when he hit the hole, brushed off four defenders and rumbled 80 yards for a touchdown.
The Packers pulled away in the second half with Stewart scoring on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.
