WESLEY CHAPEL — Shyheem Barthel racked up 128 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Steinbrenner to victory at Class 7A-District 7 rival Wiregrass Ranch.
The Warriors (2-5) entered the game on a three-game losing streak, but the senior running back said they haven’t given up on the season.
“We’re trying to at least give ourselves a hope at playoffs, and hopefully this will be the start of something new,” Barthel said.
Barthel scored Steinbrenner’s first three touchdowns, the first two off runs of six and five yards, respectively, and the third on a 45-yard catch on the final play of the third quarter to tie the game.
The Warriors maintained possession after recovering the ensuing kickoff on the Bulls’ (3-4) 25-yard line and capitalized when backup quarterback Quentin Poteraiski ran in from three yards out for the game’s final points.
Poteraiski was forced into action when Steinbrenner starter Curtis Fitch left the game in the second half with a head injury.
“I just practice every day to be ready for when I get my shot,” Poteraiski said. He added, “Shyheem, his running made things a lot easier for me coming in.”
