Regionals

3A-2

WHERE: New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex

WHEN: Thursday, 1 p.m.

AT STAKE: The top four individuals and relay teams in each event advance to the state finals.

WATCH FOR: Orlando Oak Ridge should run away with both the girls and boys team titles. The Pioneers are the defending 3A girls state champions. But Pasco schools competing here are more concerned about qualifying individuals for state. Land O' Lakes' Felix Soto could earn a double gold with the 1,600 and 3,200 and Wesley Chapel's Kamran Joyer is the state leader in the shot put.

3A-3

WHERE: Punta Gorda Charlotte High

WHEN: Thursday, noon

AT STAKE: The top four individuals and relay teams in each event advance to the state finals.

WATCH FOR: Defending regional champions Wharton (girls) and Hillsborough (boys) are the teams to beat once again. The Wildcats boast defending 300 hurdles champion Amani Bryant and the Terriers are paced by sprint star Lindsey Lamar and jumper/hurdler Terrence Mitchell. Wharton's boys, led by their 4x800 relay, should have something to say about the outcome. Other area schools, including Tampa Bay Tech, Blake, Armwood, Plant and Jefferson, field solid teams and/or individuals. Blake's Marissa McElveen is No. 2 in the state for the triple and long jumps.

4A-2

WHERE: Gaither High

WHEN: Thursday, 1 p.m.

AT STAKE: The top four individuals and relay teams in each event advance to the state finals.

WATCH FOR: Vero Beach is favored to win the girls team title but the boys meet could be a wide-open affair with Countryside, Palm Bay, Lakeland, Sickles, Chamberlain and Plant City all in the hunt. Nationally ranked senior Detarius Locke of Chamberlain (100 and 200) will be the show-stopper in the sprints while Derek Wehunt (1,600, 3.200) of Sickles, also among the nation's leaders, should dominate the distances.
