SPRING HILL — Springstead ended a 31-year drought against Hillsborough County teams by shredding Berkeley Prep’s 4-4 defense and rushing for 369 yards on its way to victory.
The Eagles last won against a Hillsborough County team on Nov. 12, 1982 by edging Tampa Catholic.
On Friday, Springstead (4-1) gained 429 offensive yards and 20 first downs. Senior quarterback Tyler Mahla led all rushers with a game-high 24 carries for 138 yards and his Hernando County-leading seventh touchdown of the season.
The Eagles’ Mahla was complemented nicely by junior fullback Daniel Wright’s 26 carries for 124 yards and one touchdown, a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Seniors Kevin Bedford (four carries for 55 yards) had a 45-yard touchdown run, and Malcolm Fitts (six carries for 43 yards) added one from 14 yards out.
Kicker Tyler Toth added a 20-yard field goal.
Quarterback Brad Mayes finished eight of 16 passing for a game-high 134 yards with two touchdowns passes to juniors N’namdi Green and Ben Novello and no interceptions for the Bucs (2-2).
