RIVERVIEW — Jesse Holmes caught a touchdown pass, ran for a score and returned an interception for another in the first half as Spoto rolled over visiting Wharton in the season opener for both teams.
Kevin Hobley threw for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Todd Sims scored twice as the Spartans put up points on their first four possessions. Holmes rushed for a team-high 51 yards and stepped in front of a receiver before scampering 25 yards to give Spoto a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Wharton fumbled on its third play from scrimmage and the Spartans capitalized when Sims zipped 25 yards up the middle on their third play for the first touchdown.
Holmes ran 5 yards for a score on the next series and Terence Williams picked off a pass to set up Hobley’s 5-yard touchdown strike to Holmes with 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Wildcats missed a field goal on their next series and two plays later Hobley hit Sims in stride before the senior standout broke free for an 80-yard touchdown. Spoto’s defense held the Wildcats to 147 total yards and Wharton scored early in the second half on a safety.
