Softball: Canterbury takes 2A crown

VERO BEACH -

Lacy Scherer scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning on an error as Canterbury edged Pine Castle Christian 3-2 on Saturday to win the Class 2A softball state title.

The Crusaders (21-11) also got an RBI single from Miranda Posey in the second and a sacrifice fly from Danielle Romanello in the eighth en route to the program’s second state crown.

Canterbury thought it had lost the game — and the title — in the bottom of the eighth when two runs scored on a throwing error, but the umpires sent the second runner back to third when it was determined the throw went in a camera well, making it a dead ball.

Kama Woodall pitched nine innings for the win.
