TAMPA CATH. 6
TAMPA — A season ago, Ray Ray McCloud III rushed for 2,316 yards and 26 touchdowns. During Friday’s preseason game at Tampa Catholic, he was equally valuable defensively.
McCloud scored on the Gryphons’ opening drive, added a touchdown reception in the second quarter, then had a key late interception that led to the clinching score in Sickles’ victory.
“We want to prove that we’re not a one-man team, but what Ray brings is he can score on any play” said Sickles head coach Brian Turner. “I thought we moved the ball well without him in there, but we don’t have anyone else that can do that.”
Both teams started quickly, with McCloud’s 22-yard scoring run matched by Nate Craig’s 15-yard score out of the wildcat to give Sickles a 7-6 lead. Three possessions later, McCloud hauled in Isaac Holder’s perfect 28-yard strike on fourth down to give the Gryphons a 13-6 lead that held until midway through the fourth.
That’s when McCloud’s interception and 30-yard return to the Crusaders’ 21 set up Holder’s scoring strike to a wide-open Dillon O’Connor one play later to put the game away.
