Sickles cruises past Newsome

LITHIA — It took two plays during the opening drive for the Sickles High football team to reach the end zone. From there, it was an ongoing highlight reel of big plays that host Newsome could not stop.

Sickles' offense compiled roughly 460 yards en route to a 27-7 win Thursday.

“I don't know about dominating but our kids played good,” Sickles coach Brian Turner said. “I hate that we set them up for an easy touchdown at the end, but our kids played hard, Issac (Holder) threw the ball well and our receivers made some plays tonight.”

Holder finished the game 12 of 20 for 215 passing yards and two touchdowns along with 62 rushing yards while senior receiver Jaaron Barrett caught four passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Ray Ray McCloud III rushed for 172 yards with a touchdown and caught a pass for 40 yards. He could have added a 52-yard punt return to his performance if not for a holding penalty.

“We've been practicing our passing game and our running game so much,” McCloud said. “We've just been working as a team with me and Issac in the backfield with my running game and his throwing game and we're just trying to make a playoff run. We haven't been there in two years and this is Issac's first year at quarterback and he's showing he's one of the best around here.”

Holder missed the majority of the second quarter with a sprained left knee, prompting Turner to put in McCloud as quarterback. McCloud attempted only one pass but did damage in the wildcat system with five consecutive runs to set up a 30-yard field goal by Daniel Lezotte.

“(McCloud) can actually throw the ball but he hadn't warmed up or anything and he is actually our backup quarterback,” Turner said. “It is beneficial to have two guys back there that can run the ball.”

Sickles (3-0) led 13-0 at the half and went up 27-0 in the third quarter thanks to a 63-yard touchdown run by McCloud and a 3-yard touchdown pass from Holder to Brandon Washington, which was set up by a 49-yard pass from Holder to Barrett.

Next week, Sickles hosts Steinbrenner and Newsome is at Alonso.
