TAMPA — The only things that could stop the Sickles offense or running back Ray Ray McCloud were penalty flags — and there were plenty of them.
Sickles and Durant combined for 40 penalties, including 22 by the Gryphons, who won 28-0. McCloud ran for 232 yards and two TDs, and Isaac Holder connected with Jaaron Barrett for two touchdowns.
It was a sloppy win, but Sickles coach Brian Turner said he would take it. “Our defense was great,'' he said. “We were sloppy, but when you shut out a team that went 10-0 last year, that's saying something. Ray Ray was great, and our quarterback was also great.''
Holder ran for 80 yards to go with his two touchdown passes.
Durant lost in the second round of the playoffs last year, but has been outscored 77-6 this season.
Sickles scored on its first possession when Holder found Barrett in the corner of the end zone for the TD. The drive was set up by a 40-yard run by McCloud on the second play from scrimmage. McCloud capped a long drive with an 11-yard TD run to make it 14-0.
Durant moved deep into Sickles territory, and McCloud blocked a field goal try. The Gryphons moved downfield, and Holder hooked up with Barrett on a 34-yard touchdown toss and the rout was on.
