SEFFNER — Seffner Christian quarterback Caleb Newman threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and a score to help the Crusaders defeat Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic at Armwood High School.
The Crusaders rushing attack also got a big boost from Karmi Mackey, who finished with 77 yards and a touchdown.
Santa Fe took a 6-0 lead on its first drive, but on the ensuing kickoff, Robbie Shell went 70 yards, breaking four tackles, and it was all Seffner from there.
Newman connected on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Flatt to start the second quarter. Seffner added to its lead with help from Santa Fe’s special teams. After a muffed punt set up the Crusaders inside the Hawks’ 30-yard line, Newman broke off a 14-yard scoring run.
Seffner Christian scored on all three of its drives in the third quarter. Newman started the first drive by collecting 31 yards on the ground and 21 through the air.
Flatt caught four passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Shell broke off a 56-yard scoring run in the third.
