TAMPA — Robinson coach Sean Taylor said he was proud of the way his team played during Friday night’s victory against Chamberlain.
“Wins have been slim this year,” Taylor said. “The defense played well all day (against) a good team, I’m so proud of them.”
Slim may have been the best description as the Knights (3-5, 3-3 in Class 6A-District 8) won after Brandon Peters intercepted the Chiefs’ 2-point conversion pass with just over a minute remaining.
In the first quarter, Chamberlain (4-4, 4-2) took the lead on a field goal from Will Shidler as both teams struggled to move the ball offensively. Robinson’s lone breakout play of the opening half came on a Javaughn Johnson’s 58-yard scoring run up the middle in the second quarter.
Shidler evened the game on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Later in the fourth quarter, Knights quarterback Darius Autry completed four consecutive passes, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jahrvis Davenport.
The Chiefs answered with a quick touchdown strike from Josh Bennett to James Martin, but could not convert as Peters interception ended the rally.
