RIVERVIEW — Quarterback Keisean Young rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns as Riverview held off Brandon for its first victory of the season.
Fred McCoy’s 16-yard touchdown run gave Riverview a 28-14 lead with 5:16 left in the game, but the Sharks had to stop Brandon on the final drive with their third interception to seal it. Riverview (1-1), which lost to East Bay in overtime last week, had 305 yards on the ground and threw only one pass.
The Sharks kept the ball for more than 8 minutes after the opening kickoff, driving 73 yards in 14 plays before Young’s 1-yard touchdown dive. After quarterback Brandon Jones capped a drive with a 15-yard run to tie it, Young ran 65 yards up the middle to give Riverview the lead for good with 6 seconds left in the first quarter.
“What I love about (Young) is he is a tough kid,” Riverview coach Mike Thornton said. “He showed his grit and his athleticism.”
Young also ran 75 yards for a score with 8:14 left in the first half. Jon Jones scored on a 10-yard run on the first drive of the third quarter and pulled Brandon (1-2) within 28-21, breaking several tackles to score on a 52-yard screen pass with 4:27 remaining.
