HUDSON — River Ridge High overcame a late deficit to pull out a 3-2 district victory against Fivay in a Class 5A-District 8 baseball game Tuesday night.
With Sean Fluke on the mound for the Falcons and Jason Heinrich pitching for River Ridge, the game followed the script, with both dominating the opposing lineups.
Fivay jumped to an early 2-1 lead, and it looked like that would be enough with the way Fluke was mowing down River Ridge hitters.
River Ridge broke through in the top of the sixth. Gage Ledford led off with a single, and he reached third base on Heinrich’s single. Tyler Hawks followed with a towering fly ball that was lost in the lights and fell in for a hit in left-center, driving in Ledford to tie the game at 2.
Once the game was tied, Heinrich went to work on the mound to keep it that way.
He set down Fivay in order in the sixth and seventh innings, with three strikeouts, to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Ledford and Heinrich again came through with singles, and Ledford scored the winning run on Devon Woodward’s sac fly.
Rocco Iervasi pitched the bottom of the eighth to earn the save for the Knights.
River Ridge coach Jack Homko liked his team’s competitiveness while playing from behind.
“We hung in there.” Homko said. “We scratched and clawed, and Heinrich’s pitching kept us in it.
“Their pitcher was very good, so we knew it would be close.”
