Region Track Preview

Class 4A-2

WHERE: Leto High

WHEN: Wednesday. Field events begin at 10 a.m.

OUTLOOK: The top four in each event advance to the state meet. Local favorites include Plant’s Jack Guyton, who ranks among the state’s top 1,600-meter runners with a personal best of 4:19.07. Guyton and Sickles’ James Zentmeyer are also favored in the 3,200 with personal-bests under 9:26. Also watch for Bloomingdale’s 4x800 relay, which ran a blazing 7:51.88 at the Florida Relays a few weeks ago. In the field events, Newsome pole vaulter David Kornitzer is expected to advance after hitting 13 feet, 7 inches earlier this year. There should be a great race to start the day in the girls’ 4x800 between Wharton and Steinbrenner, which rank ninth and 10th in the state with personal-best times of 9:35.67 and 9:36.24, respectively. Wharton’s Bryanna Rivers is also favored in the 800 meters (2:22.44) and the 1600 (5:23.49).

Class 3A-3

WHERE: Leto High

WHEN: Wednesday. Field events begin at 10 a.m.

OUTLOOK: Jefferson’s Deiondre Porter is favored to advance in the long jump (22-3.75 at districts), and 100 and 200-meter dashes. Middleton’s Anthony Rhynes, however, is seeded ahead of Porter after beating him in the 100 and 200 meters last week. Robinson’s Jack Rogers looks to be in fine form after winning the district title in the 800 and 1,600 and posting the 16th fastest 1,600 in the state earlier this year (4:20.39). On the girls’ side, Spoto’s Janae Caldwell (200 and 400 meters) is favored along with Gaither 800-meter runner specialist Rachel Cazares, who appears to have put a midseason cold behind her.
