WHERE: Brandon High
WHEN: Today — preliminaries, 4-9 p.m.; Saturday — preliminaries, 9 a.m.; semifinals, noon; finals, 5 p.m.
FORMAT: Pool play with 20 teams. Winners of four pools advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Winners of semifinals move to finals.
OUTLOOK: Brandon, winner of 24 state titles, including 13 in a row, is favored to win the title for the 10th time in the tournament’s 11-year history. Defending Class 1A state champion Lake Highland Prep should give the Eagles plenty of fight, along with Georgia’s Kingsland Camden and Collins Hills, which are ranked No. 1 in their state’s respective classifications. Alabama’s Vestavia High also is ranked high, along with Miami South Dade, Miami Braddock, Olympic Heights, Fort Lauderdale Western, Miami Southwest and St. Thomas Aquinas. “Top to bottom, I think this is probably the most talent we’ve had at this tournament,” Brandon coach Russ Cozart said. “It’s great because teams want to come in here and test us. We welcome it. It’s great for wrestling.”
