Class 4A-Region 2
WHERE: Leto High

WHEN: Today; field events begin at noon

LOCAL TEAMS: Alonso, Bloomingdale, Durant, Freedom, Newsome, Plant, Plant City, Riverview, Tampa Bay Tech, Wharton

OUTLOOK: Lots to look forward to at this meet, including Freedom’s Sandra Akachukwa, who has the chance to qualify for the state meet in four events — the 200 meters, 100 meters, long jump and high jump. That said, Freedom, which won its first district team title last week, might have a shot at taking the girls regional championship as well. A couple of other events to keep an eye on include Bloomingdale’s boys in the 4x800, who could go under 8 minutes for the first time this season, and Alonso hurdler William Taylor-Haynes, who may be fast enough to win a state title.

Class 3A-Region 2
WHERE: Leto High

WHEN: Today; field events begin at noon

LOCAL TEAMS: Anclote, Blake, Chamberlain, Gaither, Hillsborough, Jefferson, King, Sickles, Steinbrenner

OUTLOOK: This meet features none other than Hillsborough’s Jeremiah Green, who not only owns the longest triple jump in the nation this year (52 feet, 1.75 inches), but also has a chance to qualify for the state meet in four events — the triple jump, long jump, 100 and 200 meters. Steinbrenner has several boys distance runners who have strong shots at moving onto state, including Matt McGee and Tyler Bess-Lima in the 800 and 3,200 meters respectively. Steinbrenner’s 4x800 team is among the favorites to take the regional title. On the girls side, Hillsborough’s Jorian Ordway (400, 200) and King’s Carrol Hardy (100, 200) are expected to compete for individual regional titles.

Class 3A-Region 3
WHERE: Punta Gorda Charlotte High

WHEN: Thursday; field events begin at 1 p.m.

OUTLOOK: The Armwood boys won their district title behind Aaron Covington, who took first in three events. Covington won the 200, the high jump and was on the winning 4x100 relay. The Strawberry Crest boys and girls both finished second in the district meet.
