The Wiregrass Ranch and Mitchell swim teams finished in the top three Thursday at the Class 3A-District 6 meet at the Rowdy Gaines Pool in Winter Haven.
Winter Haven won both the boys and girls titles, while Wiregrass was second and Mitchell third in both meets.
“I wanted to win the trophy for Mitchell and the kids,” Mitchell boys coach Tanner Schmitz said.
“Almost every boy on the team swam a personal best today. We have our fair share of kids that get to move on. It’s a step in the right direction.”
Among those moving on to regionals were Wiregrass Ranch’s Matt Menendez, who won district titles in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Mitchell’s Kevin Smith (100 backstroke).
On the girls side, Mitchell had a few individuals that qualified for regionals next week, including Taylor Anderson (50 freestyle, 24.32), Amy Murry (100 breaststroke) and Katherine Cancello (100 IM, 500 freestyle).
Wiregrass Ranch sophomore Madison Conway was a two-time winner, taking district crowns in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
