To preview the 2013 high school football season, The Tampa Tribune is counting down the top 10 teams in Hillsborough County. These preseason rankings were voted on by Tribune writers Nick Williams and Scott Purks, high school sports editor Doug Jacobs and correspondents Mike Camunas and Jarrett Guthrie.
TAMPA — Everybody thinks Robinson must be in big trouble after graduating 26 contributors and 16 starters and losing legendary coach Mike DePue to retirement.
Everybody but Robinson.
The Knights, who finished the 2012 season with a 12-2 record before losing in the Class 5A state semifinals, say they not only had a solid team in 2012 but they have developed a solid program overall.
The strength starts with an intense weight and conditioning program, new head coach Shawn Taylor (a former Robinson assistant and alumnus) and middle linebacker Jordan Guyton, who led Robinson in 2012 with 99 tackles. Robinson will have its hands full in Class 6A-District 8 with Armwood, Hillsborough and Jefferson, but the Knights insist they are afraid of no one. One of the biggest questions begins at offensive line where all five starters graduated and at quarterback where prolific quarterback Zain Gilmore also graduated.
As for who will start at quarterback, its either Travis Forehand or Darius Autry. Forehand is a 6-foot-5 drop-back passer, while the 6-foot Autry is more of a running threat. Either one, however, should work fine in the Knights’ multifaceted offense.
