Prep football: Pasco Top 5

Published:

The Pasco County prep football Top 5 is voted on by correspondents Steve Campbell, Mike Camunas, Chris Errington, Kyle LoJocano, Bart O’Connell, Kenny Sanders and Andy Villamarzo.

1. Pasco, 58 points (2 first-place votes)

Last week: Bye: The king of the county is back on top, but by a slim margin. Despite a season-opening loss and, at times, what has looked like struggles, the Pirates have allowed seven points since Week 1 and 24 all season. Pasco has been led on offense by Malik Johns (7 TD) and defense by Brandon Debyah (27 tackles) and Jacob Morphew (5.5 sacks).

2. Land O’ Lakes, 56 points (4 first -place votes)

Last week: 45-21 win at Mitchell: The Gators are the county’s lone undefeated team. Contributing to that has been not just the team’s high-tempo offense led by James Pensyl (75-for-124 passing for 1,153, 9 TDs, INT, 2 rushing TDs), but the Gators defense, which has 18 sacks (6 by Darius Wells, 5 by Shaheed Salmon) and has allowed 8.5 points per game.

3. Sunlake, 52 points (1 first-place vote)

Last week: 14-13 loss at Springstead: The Seahawks stumbled, but their swarming defense did allow 14 points and now 20 on the season. Yet, despite successes on offense, such as RB Nathan Johnson (486 yards, 4 TD), Expect a talented defense to continue to shut down opponents, especially with LB Ben Wood (45 tackles) and DL Zion Osborn (6 sacks).

4. Zephyrhills, 30 points

Last week: 38-15 loss at South Sumter: The Bulldogs’ next three weeks — hosting Weeki Wachee and traveling to Nature Coast that sandwich a bye week — are vital to staying in the 5A-6 hunt. Contingent on that will be the play of Ty Tanner, Tyler Kirby, Devon Brockington, Jordan Roberts and Jaylen Pickett, who will have to work harder to up the team’s 11-touchdown total.

5. Hudson, 8 points

Last week: 15-6 win at Wesley Chapel: The Cobras break into the Top 5, thanks to a two-game winning streak and proving their are one of the frontrunners to take the wide-open 5A-7. Coach Mark Kantor has rebuilt this program, which includes having QB Joey Caruso, and RB Noah Siegrist, who leads the county in rushing: 551 yards on 86 carries.

Also receiving votes: Mitchell, Fivay
