Prep football: Pasco County Top 5

Published:

1. Sunlake

68 points (6 first-place votes)

Last week: 28-21 OT win vs. Land O’ Lakes: The Seahawks are back on top thanks to a thrilling overtime win against their rivals, but more importantly, their postseason hopes are still alive. Sunlake has been led by junior running back Nathan Johnson, who has a county-high 1,108 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, while the defense, led by Ben Wood (85 tackles) and Zion Osborn (8.5 sacks) has allowed 44 points.

2. Zephyrhills

56 points (1 first-pace vote)

Last week: 70-21 win at Brooksville Central: The Bulldogs have proven they are one of the county’s top teams. And they’ve also shown that missing the playoffs, something they’ve done since 2006, will be nothing short of a disappointing season. Behind Jaylen Pickett and Devon Brockington (10 touchdowns each), Zephyrhills will need to win its last two district games (Hernando, Pasco) to be 5A-6 runner-up.

3. Land O’ Lakes

42 points

Last week: 28-21 OT loss at Land O’ Lakes: The Gators were finally handed their first loss of the season. Land O’ Lakes, led by junior QB James Pensyl (115 of 205 passing, 1,516 yards, 10 TDs, INT), needs to win its final two district games (Fivay, Spring Hill Springstead) to force a three-way tiebreaker game on Nov. 4 for a chance to make the playoffs.

4. Pasco

26 points

Last week: 7-0 win at Hernando: Despite a 2-3 start, the Pirates are poised to still make the playoffs, but have to win their final district games: Central this week and next week at Zephyrhills. Luckily for Pasco, it still has ATH Malik Johns (county-high 14 TDs) and WR Nate Craig returned last week after it was thought he would miss three more weeks. The Pirates are looking to make the playoffs for the seventh-straight season.

5. Hudson

16 points

Last week: 47-26 win vs. Ridgewood: The Cobras need one district win to set up a 5A-District 7 title game with Anclote next week, but are facing always-competitive River Ridge tonight. That Hudson is in this position in such a short time since coach Mark Kantor took over in early 2012, shows the Cobras’ 180-degree turnaround is nearly complete.

Also receiving votes: Anclote

The Pasco County prep football Top 5 is voted on by correspondents Steve Campbell, Mike Camunas, Chris Errington, Kyle LoJocano, Bart O’Connell, Kenny Sanders and Andy Villamarzo.
