Each week, the Tribune prep sports staff selects a Male and Female Athlete of the Week. The selections are based on athletic performance.
Ray Ray McCloud III, Sickles
WHY WE CHOSE HIM: McCloud, the leading rusher in Hillsborough County, ran for 248 yards with four touchdowns in Friday's win over Tampa Bay Tech, giving the Gryphons their first district title in school history. McCloud now has 1,684 yards on the ground this season and 19 TDs for the 8-1 Gryphons.
COLLEGE PLANS: Though only a junior, McCloud has 18 Division I scholarship offers and counting, including Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, UCLA and Clemson.
Elle Chancey, Berkeley Prep
WHY WE CHOSE HER: Chancey, a junior, won the Class 1A-Region 3 50-yard freestyle (24.35) and 100 freestyle (53.10) on Saturday to earn an automatic berth to the state championships and help the Buccaneers' girls swim team claim the region championship. Chancey's times in both events were faster than her performance at the state meet last year (25.29 and 54.42), when she finished 19th and 17th overall.
COLLEGE PLANS: Chancey is interested in swimming at the University of Virginia, Brown and Northwestern and has also received interest from a few Division III programs.
