Each week, the Tribune prep sports staff selects a Male and Female Athlete of the Week. The selections are based on athletic performance.
Deiondre Porter, Jefferson
WHY WE CHOSE HIM: The senior quarterback threw for 163 yards and rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Dragons in a come-from-behind victory against Largo in the Class 6A region quarterfinals last week. Porter has been the leading passer in Hillsborough County this season and second in rushing, accumulating more than 2,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing.
COLLEGE PLANS: Porter has verbally committed to South Florida.
Maddie Hess, Newsome and Ally Donahue, Plant
WHY WE CHOSE THEM: Hess and Donahue had such a great showing at the Class 4A state swim meet last week, it was only fair to choose both. Hess, a junior, won three gold medals and a bronze, capturing state titles in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and as a member of the 200 free relay team. Hess also helped the 400 free relay earn bronze. Donahue, also a junior, won gold in the 50 free and 100 backstroke and won a bronze as part of Plant's 200 medley relay team.
COLLEGE PLANS: Hess has strong interest from Florida and Indiana. Donahue has interest from, among others, UCLA, Stanford, Princeton, Auburn and Florida.
