LARGO -

It was a rough day for Pasco County teams in the Fifth Annual Indian Rocks Christian Holiday tournament Tuesday at Largo. Of the three teams from Pasco County in the tournament, all lost and will enter the consolation bracket after the first day of the tournament.

Wesley Chapel's girls along with the boys squads from Land O' Lakes and Zephyrhills each dropped their opening games of the tournament.

Wesley Chapel lost to Gilmour Academy (Ohio) 45-30 while Land O' Lakes boys fell to Dixie Hollins 54-50. Zephyrhills dropped its opener to Lake Mary Prep 69-36.

Zephyrhills had little chance after the early going, trailing by 10 in the first quarter and 34-16 at halftime.

As has been the case with Zephyrhills, controlling the ball was an issue.

"We struggled with turnovers all year," Zephyrhills coach Dustin Rowe said. "This game continues that story. We have to look to get better every game so that by the end of the year we are ready to go."

That's just what Rowe is using the five games over the holiday break as: hard practices.

Zephyrhills has three games at Indian Rocks and two games next week.

"We are looking for different combinations [of players] to see which ones can go and which ones we can get a little bit of a lift from," Rowe said. "We are hoping to take the few good things that happened here and build from there."

Despite the score, Rowe did see some positives in the game.

"I think some of the effort, especially with Devin McLeod, was very good," Rowe said. "He showed leadership. He's the one returning starter we have. He gets it. Overall, I am trying to keep that going and get that message to the team, that we are not a one-man show. We need to be more of a team. But the effort was there.

"In the second half, yeah, I was seeing which groups can mesh together and we can learn from that and build off of that. We have many new faces. The season has been kind of, 'Hey, let's try this and see how it works' or 'Let's try that and see how it works.'"

McLeod led Zephyrhills with 10 points.

Wesley Chapel's girls squad couldn't get much going against Gilmour outside of Hannah Noble's 16 points, including three three-point field goals as they fell behind big early.

Land O' Lakes hung a bit tougher but Dixie Hollins had just a little more near the end. Darrell Warren had a nice day for the Gators with 19 points.
