LITHIA — On Friday night, Newsome’s Austin Cobb kicked three field goals to help overcome the loss of quarterback Spencer Preston in a rematch of last year’s Class 7A region semifinal.
Revenge-minded Durant (1-6) struck first on a 36-yard field goal by Derek Wells late in the first quarter. A minute before halftime, Preston was looking for the go-ahead score when he was slammed from behind at the Durant 8-yard line. The junior was helped off the field with an injured left knee, and Newsome (4-3) settled for a 25-yard field goal by Cobb.
“I didn’t play that good in the first half, and I was just trying to make something happen. It’s just one of those freak injuries,” said Preston, who spent the rest of his homecoming game at the end of the bench while backup Cole Schaller led two more scoring drives and had Newsome in the shadow of the Durant goal line as time expired.
Minutes earlier, Durant mounted one last threat after recovering a fumble at the Newsome 36-yard line. On fourth-and-goal from the 4, Joe Williamson caught a pass from Trey VanDeGrift but landed outside the back of the end zone with 3:38 to go to end Durant’s rally.
