GIBSONTON — A week ago, Lennard turned some heads by winning its Kickoff Classic in impressive fashion, 57-0 against St. Pete Catholic.
But preseason is one thing and the regular season is quite another.
However, the Longhorns kept the momentum going Friday by surprising East Bay, a playoff team from a year ago.
Lennard struck on its first drive when Jahn Bailey scored from 4 yards out, giving the Longhorns a 7-0 advantage.
East Bay fumbled on its opening possession and Lennard recovered. The Longhorns capitalized on the turnover as quarterback Devin Black connected with wide receiver Diontae Johnson for a 40-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.
Lennard’s third drive also resulted in a touchdown. After Black and Johnson connected on a 53-yard pass play, Josh Shelman made it 21-0 with a 5-yard touchdown run.
East Bay closed to 21-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run before the half.
However, Lennard put the game away on its second drive of the third quarter. After a 35-yard reception by Deshawn Barnes, Bailey scored on an 8-yard run to make it 28-7.
