Eddie Gosicki ripped a two run single in the bottom of the 7th to give the Mitchell Mustangs an 11-10, come-from-behind win over Land O'Lakes in a 4A regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Mitchell high school.
It was an uphill climb fro the Mustangs all night as they battled back from deficits of 7-0 and 10-6. The game had the makings of a rout in the Gators' favor, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Mitchell starter Kevin Games struggled with control, walking four batters and giving up seven hits in the first three innings, but the Mustangs' potent bats came to life in their half of the 3rd. RBI singles by Conner Hale, Cobi Johnson, Jordan Dietsch, and Gavin Hunt made it a 7-4 game.
The Mustangs made it a one run game in the 4th but Land O'Lakes added some insurance in the 5th, scoring on two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Gino Pepenella to give the Gators a 10-6 lead.
The solid relief pitching of D.J. Krouse and Trey McKnickle seemed to settle down the Mustang bats, but in the bottom of the 7th Mitchell rallied. Hunt led off with a single followed by a walk by Joey Koehler and an infield hit by Conner Hale loading the bases. Cleanup hitter Kevin Games knocked in two of the runs with a single, and then stole second, setting up Gosicki's heroics.
"I didn't even feel any pressure." said Gosicki. "I just wanted to stay back on the ball, and drive it up the middle and find a place where their guys weren't." Mitchell will host (Pasco or Hernando) Friday night in the region semifinal.
