LAND O' LAKES -

If there's anyone concerned about disarray inside the Land O' Lakes football program - relax.

This is the first time in more than three decades, John Benedetto has not walked the team's sidelines and a coach has yet to be named. That said, Land O' Lakes still appears loaded with talented during its Blue and Gold intrasquad spring football game Friday night.

The Gold scored in the final seconds to win, 13-7.

Stephen Weatherford, who transferred to Tampa Catholic in January and returned to Land O' Lakes in May, plowed up the middle for a 1-yard score, to give the Gold team the victory.

In the third quarter, the rising junior broke a scoreless tie after arching a pass over a defender and into the arms of Andrew Moore for a 23-yard touchdown. Weatherford completed 6-of-10 passes for 86 yards and a score and led the Gold squad with 47 rushing yards on 10 carries. Moore led all receivers with 46 yards on three receptions.

The Blue team answered on the next possession when Andrew Gorgen blew through tacklers for a 22-yard score, knotting the game, 7-7. He ended the night with 50 yards on four carries, while Ryan Lane had 51 yards in four touches.

Defensively, the Gold collected two interceptions and two sacks, while the Blue squad had one sack and an interception.

When asked to sum up the Gators' spring, associate head/line coach Tom Carter replied: "Perseverance. These kids never gave up. They fought, they took criticism and coaching very well. I'd say they persevered, overcome, committed, were dedicated and in the situation they're in, that shows a lot of character in these young men."

According to outgoing athletic director Chuck Moehle, a head coach could be named by next week.
