NEW PORT RICHEY — Land O’ Lakes resorted to its running game last week, which racked up more than 200 yards.
This time around, the Gators (5-0) used several different facets, including another strong rushing game, to defeat feisty Gulf at Des Little Stadium in a Sunshine Athletic Conference matchup.
Scoring opened up midway through the first quarter, as Land O’ Lakes quarterback James Pensyl (14 of 31, 119 yards) found wide receiver Liam Heaney on a 3-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0. Later in the quarter, running back Larenz Scroggins (16 carries, 171 yards) rumbled in from 37 yards out with 58 seconds left in the first period. Gulf (0-4) was held to 100 yards of offense in the first half.
Gulf pulled within 24-20 on a 6-yard scoring run by Joey Nickerson (17 carries, 78 yards) with 13.6 seconds left in the third quarter. Scroggins was able to seal the game for Land O’ Lakes with 8:30 remaining as the tailback scored from 5 yards out and put the Gators up 31-20.
Miscues and turnovers hindered the Buccaneers as Gulf turned over the football three times on the night. Land O’ Lakes finished the night with 13 first downs and Gulf had 12.
