ST. PETERSBURG -- People knew this season-opening boys basketball game between Lakewood and Northeast was something special when the Lakewood pep band serenaded its Spartans as they took the court for pregame warm-ups.

And the game was held at Northeast.

The 68-42 Lakewood win was almost lost in the significance of what the win meant: The victory marked Lakewood coach Dan Wright's 600th victory as the Spartans coach.

"I very seldom concern myself with personal statistics," Wright said afterwards trying to downplay his milestone. "We've been blessed to have a whole lot of good kids in the program. I attribute it all to all the players starting way back when [1977]. It's really a family deal from then until now.

"It's a team sport. My job is to do the best job I possibly can to make these young men better people."

Wright guided the Spartans to Class 4A state titles in 2002 and 2005.
