TAMPA — It took two days and two overtimes for the Vikings to outlast the Buccaneers on a Grady Sharpe 27-yard field goal.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but rain and lightning in the second quarter forced a postponement until Friday.
Sharpe not only kicked the game-winning field goal, but his 19-yarder with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime.
Lakeland Christian took a 24-17 lead in the first overtime when quarterback Christian Alexander connected with Leroy DeShazor on a 5-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing possession, Berkeley faced a fourth-and-goal at the 1. Quarterback Brad Mayes ran in the touchdown to score and force a second overtime.
After a missed field goal by the Buccaneers on their possession, Sharpe kicked the game-winner.
In addition to his rushing touchdown, Mayes also threw for two scores.
Berkeley dominated the second quarter, mainly with its running attack. But it was Mayes’ 11-yard touchdown pass to Addison Grams just before halftime that gave Berkeley a 14-7 lead at the half.
