TAMPA — Less than four minutes into the game, King led 10-0 — that despite kicking the ball off to start the game.
King (4-1, 2-1 Class 6A-District 8) controlled the first half, racing to a 30-0 halftime lead, then ground to a halt in the second half but still won easily.
After a quick Yellow Jackets (2-3, 2-2) three-and-out to start the game, a botched snap to the punter resulted in a safety. On the ensuing kick, the Lions nearly brought it all the way back, setting themselves up for a second-and-goal touchdown run and a 10-0 lead.
“I think they played a good first half, but kind of relaxed in the second half,” King coach Alvin Davis said. “We've got to score in every quarter.”
Playing with a big lead, the Lions failed to earn a first down in the second half, scoring only on an interception return.
Offensively, King was led by speedy tailback Otis Williams, who racked up 119 yards on seven carries, including a 7-yard touchdown.
Next week, King hosts Hillsborough on Friday night, and Blake is at Chamberlain.
