Hillsborough Game of the Week: Armwood at Jefferson

Published:   |   Updated: September 27, 2013 at 08:44 AM

WHEN: Tonight, 7:30

WHERE: Sam Horton Field, Tampa

QB DEIONDRE PORTER VS. ARMWOOD'S DEFENSE

Armwood coach Sean Callahan made no bones about it: “The key for us is centered on stopping (Jefferson quarterback Deiondre) Porter. We will be very concerned about where he is and what he's doing.” Good idea. Porter, a senior committed to the University of South Florida, has been Hillsborough County's most dynamic player through three games, completing 25 of 53 passes for 562 yards and six touchdowns with one interception, and rushing 57 times for 461 yards and five touchdowns. “But we have six or seven guys who run pretty well on defense and plan to get after (Porter),” Callahan said. “Could get interesting.”

ARMWOOD'S RUSHING ATTACK VS. JEFFERSON'S DEFENSE

Armwood has a stable of backs, three of whom have 20 or more carries for 100-plus yards — Craig Carrington (33 carries, 161 yards), Caylon Holloway (22 carries, 158 yards) and Greg Newton (27 carries, 114 yards). A few more Hawks also get some handoffs and by the time you add it up, Armwood averages 145.5 yards rushing a game. “It's pretty much running back by committee this year,” Callahan said. “They're all good and we're trying to get carries for all of them.” Look for Jefferson to stack the box and force Johnson to throw.

WILD-CARD TALENT

Two players — Jefferson sophomore running back Mondreas Lofton and Armwood junior kicker/punter Sterling Hoffrichter — have huge potential to sway the outcome of this game. Lofton, who has shown flashes of speedy brilliance in his short varsity career, appears poised for a breakout performance on a big stage. In three games he has 39 carries for 238 yards and is a constant threat on kickoff returns. Speaking of kickoffs, Armwood's Hoffrichter rarely gives an opponent a chance for a return because he often boots it into the end zone. On field goals, Hoffrichter has made four of five with his only miss coming from 56 yards. In the punting department, he averages 45 yards with a great deal of hang time. If it comes down to a field goal to win, Armwood should be in good shape.

THE SERIES

The last time Jefferson defeated Armwood was 2001 and the score was 63-0. A lot has changed since then. Scores for the last five times the Dragons and Hawks have met:

2012 - Armwood 35, Jefferson 21

2011 - Armwood 20, Jefferson 0 (Armwood forced to forfeit victory)

2008 - Armwood 41, Jefferson 0

2007 - Armwood 26, Jefferson 9

2006 - Armwood 13, Jefferson 6
