Hillsborough County swimmers to watch

Nazareno Boscaino, Jr., Sickles: Transfer from East Lake is a two-time defending state champion in the 500 freestyle.

Ryan Franzese, Sr., Berkeley Prep: Leads a deep Bucs team that could place top five at state and will be favored to win just about any dual meet.

Wes McGovern, Sr., Newsome: Third in the 500 free and the 100 back last year at the 4A meet, McGovern is a favorite to win a state title this year.

Austin Sellers, Sr., Jesuit: The defending 2A state runner-up in the 100 breast might be capable of setting a state record. He’s looking that fast. He could also win a title in the 200 IM.

Tyler Heath,Sr., Plant: Versatile and stronger, Heath could finish the season on the podium at the state meet.

Alex Nuyianes, Sr., Academy of the Holy Names: Took fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM at last year’s 2A state meet.

Dee Sopapong, Sr., Wharton: With Plant’s Ally Donahue graduating early to attend the University of Florida, Sopapong, who finished second last year in the Class 4A state 100 breast, becomes the favorite to take gold.

Maddie Hess, Sr., Newsome: Hess can end her high school career with six state gold medals after winning two as a sophomore and two more as a junior.

Morgan Tankersley, Fr., Plant: She might be young, but she appears to be fast enough to win a state title. It all depends on which events she chooses to race.

Allyson Nied, Sr., Newsome: Third at 4A state meet last year with 424.30 points. Strong contender for title this year.
