TAMPA — In a must-win game to stay alive for the Class 6A-District 8 title, Xavier Byrd stole the show as the Hillsborough Terriers put on quite the offensive show in the second half to roll to the victory.
Byrd’s speed and elusiveness were too much for the Yellow Jackets (2-6, 2-4) to handle. The junior wide receiver finished with three attention-grabbing touchdown catches (80, 65, 60) for 240 of the Terriers’ (5-2, 5-2) 616 total yards.
Early on, it looked like Blake might make it a competitive game as it went into halftime trailing 22-14.
However, the second half was a different story as the Terriers found their rhythm.
Although the Terriers relied on their passing game, they were able to make some plays on the ground when they needed to as they accumulated 206 rushing yards.
Defensively the Terriers were solid, but allowed 340 yards.
Corey Bennett turned in an impressive performance for Blake with 20 carries for 103 yards.
Hillsborough, which started 0-2, hopes to continue its dominance next week vs. Durant.
