Fourteen minutes into Wednesday's Class 1A-Region 2 girls soccer quarterfinal, Tampa Prep junior Alexandra Daley had the Terrapins in good shape as she took a centering pass from Darla Harrison and drilled in her third goal against Bradenton Saint Stephen's.
The hat trick gave the forward 19 on the season, but the Falcons didn't go away and the night's most important goal – a 70th-minute clean-up shot in the box — helped Tampa Prep hold on for a 4-2 win.
That goal, the first of the season from senior Tattiana Lamas, seemed to stun the Falcons and do what three goals couldn't. After the match, Terrapins coach Cindy Schofield praised Lamas.
"First goal of the season — that's just awesome," Schofield said. "A senior who doesn't play club soccer, but just works so hard, she's scrappy, she earned her playing time at practice, and this is perfect."
3A-2: Kailimai's goal lifts Land O' Lakes
Trailing by a goal in the second half, host Land O' Lakes (18-4-4) rallied to defeat Hudson 2-1 and advance to the Class 3A-Region 2 semifinals for the first time since 2004.
Kameryn Kailimai scored the winner off a pass from Holly Nasello with 6 minutes left, her 12th goal of the season. Hudson feverishly tried to come back and had a late corner kick, but the Gators defense held tough led by goalkeeper Arie Bailey.
"It felt great. I started to cry," Kailimai said. "I was just trying to get it anywhere but the keeper's hands."
Hudson senior Sarah Staley scored the first goal on a high-arching shot from more than 35 yards out, just out of Bailey's reach. But Land O' Lakes rallied just 75 seconds later with a header by Raquel Villareal off a corner kick.
3A-2: Mitchell defeats Sunlake
It has looked easy for Mitchell all season, and a 4-0 region quarterfinal victory against Sunlake was no exception.
The Mustangs scored two goals in each half and cruised by the Seahawks.
"We controlled the game, and that's what we wanted to do," Mitchell coach Karl Kukec said. "We got the goals, and I don't think we're going to change much up against Land O' Lakes."
Mitchell's style was too much for Sunlake (10-9-4), with the Seahawks managing four shots compared to the Mustangs' 15. Mitchell scored in the fifth minute, when Taylor Meek knocked in a goal. Casey Bruno added another goal in the 20th minute for Mitchell (24-0-1).
Amanda Hayes scored Mitchell's two goals in the second half.
3A-3: Robinson falls
Tanya Campos' penalty kick goal with 3 seconds remaining in overtime gave Palmetto a 1-0 victory against Robinson in the Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinals.
A Robinson defender and Palmetto's Tanya Campos collided in the box while going for a loose ball. The referee gave a penalty kick to Campos, who drilled the ball into the left corner.
A similar call and a penalty kick ended Robinson's season last year in a region semifinal with just minutes remaining.
"That type of game-deciding call is a drastic call to make," Knights defender Ruth Seleznick said. "I understand that's how soccer goes sometimes, but it's hard to take."
Through regulation and the first 9:57 of overtime, Robinson (12-5) and Palmetto (13-4-3) played a near dead-even match.
3A-3: Lennard blanked
Lennard's first region tournament appearance was short-lived as the Longhorns (6-8-1) fell 9-0 in the 3A-3 quarterfinals to Osceola.
