Freedom

COACH: Todd Donohoe

2011 RECORD: 2-8

KEY LOSSES: DB/WR Tyrel Nunn, DB Kevis Allen, QB/TE Jonathan Economou, K Corey Gassaway, OL/DL Kurt Schaller, OL/DL Zach Riley, DL Adam Gassaway, DL Carlington Jackson, DB/WR Larry Thorpe.

KEY RETURNERS: LB/TE Isaac Tanner, OLB Max Orr, FS Nate Godwin, RB Anthony Henry, QB Taylor King.

SPRING FOCUS: Donohoe was the head coach at Strawberry Crest for two years, and he was also an assistant at Armwood. The program might include as many as 70 players this year, Donohoe said. There are many hurdles and question marks, but Taylor King, a sophomore, is going to be one of the keys to the Freedom offense. He's 6-foot-2, 195 pounds but he can bench press 250 pounds and is getting used to the multiple, spread offense that Donohoe wants to use. On defense, the Patriots return several key players, but the biggest impact might be newcomer Malik Robinson, a defensive end who transferred from Chicago. Donohoe said the key to the defense is it will be physical and won't be kicked around anymore. "Our goal is to get to states this year,'' Donohoe said.

Middleton

COACH: Alonzo Ashwood

2011 RECORD: 0-10

KEY LOSSES: CB Ronald Mills, RB Anthony Cusic, LB Frank Churchwell, QB/CB Antonio Brown, WR Richard Benjamin

KEY RETURNERS: LB/FB Arthur Wiggins, CB/WR/QB Anthony Carswell, S Rufus Wiggins, DE/TE Cassell Brown, LB/FB Brandon Tillman

SPRING FOCUS: In his second season as the Tigers head coach, Ashwood believes his squad is more focused and disciplined. "I came in right before the spring (practices of 2011), and that made it a little (tougher) to get everything set for that first season," Ashwood said. "I think now we all have an understanding of my expectations." In 2012, Middleton will run and throw with almost equal frequency, using Arthur Wiggins, Rufus Wiggins and Brandon Tillman in several different ways from several different positions. Many of those players will also play on both sides, helping out on a defense that looks to be far more aggressive. "I guarantee we will be better (in 2012)," Ashwood said. "We had a lot of young kids last year, a lot of kids who hadn't played much football. Now we've had a year together and we're more prepared."
