LUTZ — It wasn't pretty but Steinbrenner kept its slim playoff hopes alive by beating Freedom.
Senior Shyheem Barthel scored on two touchdown runs to lead the Warriors (3-5, 2-2 Class 7A-District 7). Other than that, the Warriors did little on offense and allowed Freedom (1-7, 0-4) plenty of chances to get back into the game.
Barthel said he knew it was an ugly win, but it was the second straight for the Warriors.
“I'm just proud we were able to finish it out,'' he said. “We are always going to be competitive.''
Barthel scored on a 6-yard run to give Steinbrenner a 10-0 lead. The Warriors were dominating on both sides when Freedom had a chance to tie it late in the second quarter when D.J. Grand found Johnny Rodicio for a 40-yard TD pass. The extra point was wide and Steinbrenner led, 10-9, at the half.
The Warriors scored early in the third quarter on a 5-yard run from Barthel, but Grant hooked up with Andre Folkes on a 25-yard pass. The two-point conversion failed.
Freedom had one last shot after two unsportsmanlike-conduct calls went against Steinbrenner late in the fourth but failed to capitalize.
