FORT MEADE — Just 23 second after scoring the go-ahead touchdown, Berkeley Prep surrendered a 44-yard score on the final play in falling to the Miners in a Class 3A-District 4 matchup.
Quarterback Brad Mayes’ 1-yard touchdown run with 23.9 seconds remaining gave the Buccaneers a 21-17 advantage. However, senior quarterback Jay Smith connected on a 44-yard desperation touchdown pass to receiver Tobias Culpepper to give the Miners the victory.
Junior running back Ryan Fulse opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a 65-yard touchdown.
Berkeley answered midway through the second quarter when Anthony Pellegrino scored on a 1-yard run. The Buccaneers then took the lead, 14-7, just before halftime on a 1-yard Mayes run.
A field goal followed by a Smith’s 11-yard touchdown run gave Fort Meade a 17-14 advantage setting up the final minute scores.
Berkeley Prep has a bye next week before it hosts Tampa Catholic on Oct. 18. The Crusaders are undefeated in district play.
