COACH: Mike Gottman

2012 RECORD: 11-1

DISTRICT: 7A-8 (Brandon, Durant, East Bay, Plant City, Strawberry Crest)

KEY LOSSES: RB Jamarlon Hamilton, C Alex Wood, OL Dalton Wilkerson, WR Reggie Gainer, LB Chris Smith, DB, Randy Baker, DE Zach Whitney

KEY RETURNERS: QB Trey Van De Grift, RB Crispian Atkins, OL Cody Martin, OL Nicholas Insley, OL/DT Chris Powell

SPRING FOCUS: Durant is coming off a 10-0 regular season in 2012 and an appearance in the regional semifinals, where it was upset by Newsome. Duplicating that feat this year might be difficult as the Cougars graduated 23 seniors off their 2012 squad, including the 20 touchdowns and 1,400 yards they got from RB Hamilton.
“(Hamilton) was a special kid,” Gottman said.
Van De Grift is back to lead the offense. Last year, the Cougars used about a 75/25 split of run to pass. This year, Gottman said his team might be closer to 50/50. Gottman is also having to spend a lot of time with his defense. Eight of the 11 starters on defense from last year graduated. “I'm concerned defensively,” Gottman said. “We have to get bigger and stronger.”

Coach: Bob Dare

DISTRICT: 2A-5 (Bradenton Christian, Carrollwood Day, Canterbury, Indian Rocks Chr., Keswick Christian, Northside Christian)

2012 RECORD: 6-4

KEY LOSSES: RB Brandon Park, WR Robbie Robertson, OL Daniel Selvia

KEY RETURNERS: WR Trevor Smith, RB Peter Arcuri, OL Toufic Awad, OL Nick Porto, OL Caleb McCullough, QB Garrett Young

SPRING FOCUS: For the first time, Cambridge Christian will be fielding a junior varsity team, so the varsity will have more depth. The Lancers have always had to get by with players playing on both sides of the ball, so the more depth, the better.
“We have 35 guys out for the team right now,'' Dare said. “When we first started we were lucky to get 20. This will be a big deal to us.''
Dare is confident sophomore quarterback Garrett Young is ready to take on a bigger load. The Lancers never had problems scoring points in 2012, but with Young having another season under his belt, the Lancers should have an even better offense. Young missed the second half of the season with an injured collarbone, so getting him into game shape is the key to the Cambridge Christian chances this year.
